Our Technology

We train State of the Art Posed Object Detection models with our private dataset and combine it with a novel feature definition and movement extrema detection

Unique animal detection

  • unique datasets with thousands of images from marine species, primarily sharks and manta rays

  • works on underwater footage of action cameras as well as aerial footage from airplanes or UAVs

  • a range of pretrained models offering a tradeoff between speed and accuracy

Flexible Feature Definition

  • Easy, flexible keypoint-based definitions: measure distances, angles, polygon areas.

  • Can be adapted to each species skeleton (e.g., measure distance between dorsal fin tip & caudal fin tip for sharks).

  • Tracks angles (snout angles, wing angles) and polygon areas (e.g., half-body area of a manta).
feature measurements
feature peaks correspond to motion extreme points like wing flaps, fin beats or steps.

Find Movement Extrema

  • Online & Offline methods to detect local peaks & valleys in movement signals.

  • Derived from keypoint motion or bounding box aspect ratio changes.

  • Identifies key behavioral events (e.g., shark fin beats, manta wing flaps, penguin steps).

  • Frequency calculation from extrema helps estimate speed, energetic costs, or event counts.
